What’s in this post:

Why Safe & Natural Ingredients Matter (Especially for Babies!) 🚼

Before we jump in, we need to talk about why it’s so crucial to be conscious of the ingredients that come in contact with young skin!

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), the average child is exposed to 27 chemicals per day that have NOT been assessed for safety, including associations with cancer, brain and nervous system damage, allergies, and hormone disruption. This is via body care products such as shampoo, lotion, creams, and sunscreen.

This study also determined that roughly 80% of children’s products labeled as “gentle” or “non-irritating” still contain ingredients linked to allergies and skin/eye irritation.

Another study by the University of Bergen discovered that 1 in 5 children have levels of “forever chemicals” (such as PFAS) in their body that are above safety limits.

I don’t share this info to scare you, but rather, to make you aware! The skin is the largest organ, so taking proactive steps to reduce any potential exposure to harmful pollutants can make a difference. Particularly since toddlers and babies have sensitive, delicate skin and bodies that are still in the early stages of development. Doing what you can to set a solid foundation for their future well-being is always a good idea!

  1. Thank you so much for this amazing guide you’ve compiled! I’m saving it to add items to my registry and for my self! So so helpful!

  2. Love love love that you put this together. Thank you!!

Quick question, what is the ingredient in the Honest shampoo and body wash that you don’t like? We are using them because they are rated pretty high on EWG. Thanks!

    1. Hi Jamie! Thank you! It’s “cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine” which is a so-so ingredient for me. I don’t mind it in things like dish soap, but when it’s coming in contact with the entire body then I try to avoid it if possible. The concern is that it can potentially form nitrosamines (a carcinogen).
