Ingredients to Avoid in Lip Balm Products
Confession: I used to hoard Lip Smackers as a pre-teen! They were allllll the rage but I kind of cringe thinking about what they’re made of. So let’s first take a look at some ingredients that are commonly found in conventional lip care products! I personally recommend avoiding these because many have been found to be carcinogenic (or can possibly be contaminated with carcinogens as a byproduct) or are known endocrine disruptors. Watch out for these on a label:
- Petroleum derivatives (mineral oil, petrolatum, petroleum jelly, paraffin)
- Synthetic fragrances or artificial flavors

Now here are some safe and non-toxic options for ya! Whether you want a basic chapstick or a luscious lip serum, I got you covered.
Poppy & Pout Lip Balms (Becca’s top overall pick! ⭐️)
Contains ethically-sourced beeswax • Plastic-free packaging • $10
How cute are these!? They are handmade in small batches in Idaho. I loveeee that the packaging is eco-friendly; it’s just a push-up cardboard tube. Poppy & Pout uses simple and natural ingredients such as ethically-sourced beeswax, organic coconut oil, and essential oils. They’re so moisturizing!
If you live in a colder climate, these can be stiffer at first, but they still apply smoothly once they touch your lips. I do appreciate that the tube is on the chubby side, so you get a bit more than most balms. These come in a bunch of fun flavors but I like the Orange Blossom which literally smells like a delicious creamsicle 🍊 This is my top choice for a standard lip balm!

FitGlow Night Lip Serum (Luxe! Best for a natural plump, moisturizing, and softening)
Contains organic beeswax and vegetable collagen • $48
Alright, I know this is a splurge, but it genuinely is 100% worth it IMO! It’s seriously such a nourishing lip treatment. Oh, and did I mention that it smells like vanilla frosting? 😍
It’s a silky gel texture and not sticky at all. The serum is formulated with vegan collagen and beet extract which have a plumping effect, and ceramides to prevent water loss! So your lips might feel a bit tingly when you apply it. But you’ll definitely notice more fullness along with sleek and hydrated lips. It’s truly a powerhouse product that offers so many all-around benefits.
If you wanna try it out, FitGlow also sells a $12 mini version of the serum! Warning: you will get hooked 😏

(I also recommend FitGlow’s tinted color serums which are similar but have pigment!)
Moroccan Magic Organic Lip Balms (Basic & budget-friendly)
Contains organic beeswax • $3.50
If you’re looking for a straightforward and basic chapstick, this is for you! These little guys are incredibly smooth and have very clean ingredients such as organic argan oil and organic coconut oil. They come in all sorts of fun scents (and unscented); I enjoy the Rose balms which are made with organic rose essential oil! 🌹
You can also find these lip balms at select Walgreens, Bed Bath & Beyond, Walmart, and HEB stores.
Alpyn Willow & Sweet Agave Lip Mask (Best for smoothing and exfoliating)
Vegan • No beeswax • $28
You may have seen this bad boy go viral on TikTok. It’s a treatment that you can just apply like a balm or leave on overnight as a mask. I personally feel like most lip scrubs and sugar scrubs can be too abrasive (and messy!!), and I actually prefer this instead! It’s awesome for rough and dry lips that need a good exfoliation. It’s made with sweet blue agave leaf and hyaluronic acid (for hydration), white willow bark (to exfoliate), and wild chokeberry (for antioxidant protection).
It has a slightly waxy consistency so you might need to warm it up for a second between your fingertips before applying it. But the finish is not really sticky or anything! It has a minor castor oil scent with some hints of berry.
The mask definitely makes my lips feel SO velvety, soft, and supple. Like, when I wear it I can’t stop rubbing my lips together because they feel so amazing! I also find that it sits nicely underneath lipstick and makes for a more seamless application.

Ilia Lip Wrap Reviving Balm (Best for lip relief and hydration)
Vegan • No beeswax • $24
The ceramic applicator is what makes this one special! It glides onto the natural curve of lips but also has a cooling sensation; it feels really relieving on chapped or inflamed lips! The texture of this is more of a thin, oily gloss instead of a balm. But after you apply it and rub lips together, the glossiness fades away and the moisture remains. It feels super cushiony and is mostly unscented!
The balm is formulated with an active level of salicornia (a plant that grows in salt marshes), hyaluronic acid, and prickly pear oil. Not only do you get hydration, but it supports lips’ innate renewal process and replenishes the moisture barrier over time 💦
Well People SPF15 Lip Butter (Best for sun protection ☀️)
Vegan • No beeswax • $15
If you’re looking for sun protection, you’ll love this one! I have tried multiple lip balms with mineral SPF in them and to be totally frank, a lot of them aren’t that great. Zinc oxide can leave lips looking pasty and white but this lip butter actually goes on clear, woohoo!
Additionally, these lip butters contain raspberry seed oil which has been found to provide some UVA/UVB protection. Well People also makes tinted versions of these lip butters if you want something with pigment!

Also available here at Target and Amazon.
(Laguna Herbals is another brand that makes SPF15 lip balms and those would be my second choice! They’re a bit more affordable but don’t go on *as* clearly as Well People’s! But they come in yummy flavors such as Chai)
