Skin Barrier 101 & Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Barrier 🧴

The skin barrier is your skin’s outer shield, mostly the stratum corneum—a mix of dead cells and lipids that lock in moisture and block out nasties like germs and pollution. It’s sturdy but can take a hit if you’re not careful.

Things that mess it up include harsh weather, stress, unhealthy diet, over-washing, or going overboard with exfoliants.

A compromised skin barrier shows up in a few noticeable ways. You might see dryness or flakiness since it can’t hold onto moisture properly. Redness and irritation are common, too, as it struggles to keep out irritants. Your skin could feel tight, itchy, or even sting when you put products on it. If it’s extra sensitive—reacting to stuff that never bothered it before—that’s another clue. Sometimes, you might even get rough patches or little bumps because the protection’s off-kilter. Basically, it’s your skin waving a flag that it’s not happy 🆘

Tips on how to maintain a strong, balanced barrier:

DOS:
✅ Oil cleansing
✅ Red light therapy
✅ Consistency with a routine
✅ Rinsing with lukewarm water
✅ Introducing only one new product at a time
✅ Using mild exfoliants and gentle actives sparingly
✅ Consuming anti-inflammatory and gut-friendly foods
✅ Being mindful of sun exposure, especially during peak hours
✅ Patch testing products on your wrist or behind your ear before use

DON’TS:
❌ Excessive sun exposure
❌ Sulfates such as SLS/SLES
❌ Rinsing or showering with HOT water
❌ Cleansers that strip and dry out skin
❌ Over-exfoliating with harsh exfoliants
❌ Essential oils and synthetic fragrances
❌ Trying too many new products at once
❌ Eating a lot of processed or inflammatory foods, such as seed oils
❌ Having an excessive routine with tons of products (sometimes, less is more!)
❌ Using too many highly concentrated actives (such as retinol or aggressive forms of Vitamin C at high doses)

Quick Note About Essential Oils:

You might be confused about why essential oils are on the “don’t” list! A common misconception is that all plant-based and natural ingredients are automatically safe and better for your skin. While that’s true a lot of the time, it’s not the case with essential oils. They are potent and can actually be sensitizing, irritating, and long-term use could lead to developed allergies. In fact, The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety in the EU considers 28 components of essential oils to be contact allergens in humans.

They’re not something you need to avoid ENTIRELY, but rather, be mindful about how often you use them on your delicate face!

Popular Barrier Products to Avoid ❌

Let’s start by reviewing some trendy brands on the market that contain ingredients I suggest avoiding. Keep in mind, just because something is advertised as being “gentle” or a “barrier repair solution” doesn’t guarantee that it’s actually beneficial for your skin or has safe ingredients.

Popular Barrier Repair Brands with Ingredients to Avoid

  • Clinique Dramatically Different Barrier Repair Lotion (mineral oil/paraffin, petrolatum, phenoxyethanol, triethanolamine, trisodium EDTA)
  • Dieux Instant Angel Peptide-Rich Barrier Repair Moisturizer (PEGs, phenoxyethanol, polysorbate 60, polyquaterium-51)
  • Drunk Elephant Bora Barrier Rich Repair Cream (carbomer, phenoxyethanol, polysorbate)
  • First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Rescue Skin Barrier Balm (not the worst but has carbomer and phenoxyethanol)
  • Laneige Water Bank Barrier Repair Moisturizer (acrylates, disodium EDTA, fragrance/parfum, silicones)
  • Paula’s Choice Paula’s Choice Resist Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer (phenoxyethanol, polyquaternium-51)
  • Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair Barrier Cream (PEGs, phenoxyethanol)
  • The INKEY List Repairing Barrier Strengthening Moisturizer (laureth-12, phenoxyethanol, silicones)
  • The Ordinary Barrier Support Serum (ceteth-20, chlorphenesin, isoceteth-20, phenoxyethanol)

The potential health effects of these ingredients include skin irritation (ironic, huh?), allergic reactions, endocrine disruption, contamination with carcinogenic byproducts, enhanced absorption of harmful substances, environmental pollution, and exposure to undisclosed chemicals.

Now, here are some clean topicals that can help restore and replenish skin! Note: all of these are formulated without essential oils.

Alpyn Barrier Repair Cream

$23-62 • Cruelty Free & Vegan • National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance™

Alpyn Barrier Repair Cream

This is one of my all-time fave moisturizers! It’s a rich, restorative cream made with ceramides, ghostberry (known as “nature’s Neosporin” and has calming properties), Tasmanian pepper (targets redness), and peptides. It can also assist with fine lines and wrinkles.

Alpyn Barrier Repair Cream

The cream is unscented and has a natural, semi-matte finish, so you get adequate moisture, but it doesn’t feel heavy or greasy at all. So good!

Cocokind Ceramide Barrier Serum

$22 • Cruelty Free & Vegan • National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance™

Cocokind Ceramide Barrier Serum

We love an affordable option! This is a blend of five ceramides and lipids (fatty acids, cholesterol, squalane) which reinforce your skin’s natural moisture barrier and protect against external aggressors.

It’s unscented, hydrating, and plays well with other skincare products (it won’t pill underneath moisturizers, for example). If you’re on a budget but still need some TLC, check this out! You can buy it in a jumbo size as well.

Earth Harbor Horizon Ceramide Recovery Serum

$25 • Cruelty Free & Vegan • Non-GMO • Refillable

Earth Harbor Horizon Ceramide Recovery Serum

Not only is this serum a pretty purple color, but it smells lovely with a light, fruity aroma. It’s made with açai phytosterols, rice lipids, mushroom, beta glucan, and kelp probiotic which fight inflammation, rejuvenate, plump, support skin elasticity, boost collagen, balance pH, and overall maintain healthy barrier function.

I like how smoothly it applies—it feels more like a hydrating gel/cream texture and sinks into skin quickly with a soft finish. My skin always feels so good when I use it!

Ilia Barrier Build Skin Protectant Cream

$64 • Cruelty Free & Vegan • National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance™

Ilia Barrier Build Skin Protectant Cream

Ilia’s cream is a little thicker, yet lightweight, and has a silky, soft-touch feel. It’s formulated with 1% colloidal oatmeal, an FDA-approved soothing skin protectant, and ceramides, fatty acids, algae hydrogel, and bioavailable calcium, which comfort and reinforce the skin barrier.

It’s fragrance-free and non-comedogenic!

Magic Molecule Hypochlorous Acid Spray

$32 • Cruelty Free & Vegan • National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance™

Magic Molecule Hypochlorous Acid Spray

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) sounds intense, but it’s a gentle healing powerhouse that’s non-drying, non-toxic, and irritant-free. Because it’s a natural byproduct of the body’s immune system, HOCl is well tolerated even by those with sensitive skin. It works as an antimicrobial to defend and mend skin; it promotes new tissue formation, calms inflammation, alleviates irritation, and combats redness. It’s truly magic 🪄

There are a bunch of HOCl brands, but I prefer Magic Molecule because it’s one of the few FDA-cleared options that’s dermatologist-tested, shelf-stable for 18-24 months, and has an ideal pH balance. You just use it like a toner and spray it on skin before applying serums or moisturizing! (just let it completely dry first)

(Heads up, it has a mild chlorine smell)

Manuka Honey

$40 • Unique Manuka Factor UMF™ Member • Non-GMO

Manuka Honey

I’ve been singing the praises of manuka honey for years! 🍯 It was super helpful when I was healing my acne, but it’s awesome for anyone with skin, basically.

Manuka honey comes from the Australia/New Zealand region from the nectar of a manuka tree. It contains up to 100x more methylglyoxal (MG, the antibacterial property) than regular honey and is antifungal, anti-inflammatory, heals wounds, draws moisture to skin, and boosts collagen. It’s a godsend for any sort of skin aggravation!

Three Peaks Manuka Honey

I like to use manuka as a face mask 1-2x per week; just apply it to slightly damp skin for about an hour and rinse it off. It also makes for a nice cleanser that won’t strip skin (not for removing makeup, though). I seriously don’t know what I would do without it!

Mountain Rose Herbs Tamanu Oil

$17-52 • Vegan • USDA Certified Organic • Non-GMO Verified • Regenerative Organic Certified • Kosher

Mountain Rose Herbs Tamanu Oil

Don’t be afraid of facial oils—they’re incredible! This only has one ingredient: organic unrefined cold-pressed tamanu oil.

Tamanu oil is extracted from seeds of the tamanu nut tree which is native to Southeast Asia. It’s been used medicinally for hundreds of years by some cultures in Asia and Africa! 🌰 It has amazing properties: antifungal, anti-inflammatory (contains calophyllolide which has similar effects to hydrocortisone), soothing, antibacterial, rich in fatty acids, improves barrier function, stimulates cell turnover, and wound healing abilities.

This is always my go-to when my skin is reactive or angry. The oil is on the thicker side, FYI, and I like to mix a few drops into a moisturizer as a booster! But you can definitely use it on its own too; it does not feel too greasy. It’s a great way to get a hefty dose of tamanu straight to your skin.

(BTW, tamanu smells nutty, earthy, grassy, and a bit smoky. I enjoy it, but it might take some getting used to!)

Sun & Moo The Healer Tallow Balm

$42 • Grass-Fed/Finished • Organic • Mold Free

Sun & Moo The Healer Tallow Balm

Tallow…yes, as in rendered beef fat hehe 🐮 Did you know that tallow is LOADED with nutrients such as Vitamins A, B12, D, E, K, and fatty acids? It also has some antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. I was skeptical, but I actually love how it makes my skin feel and doesn’t make me break out.

Sun & Moo Healer Tallow Balm with Tamanu Oil

Not only is The Healer balm from Sun & Moo made from grass-fed/finished tallow, but it also has organic tamanu oil and organic baobab oil! Baobab has comparable benefits to tamanu and aids in the restoration process. It’s such a delightful treat for troubled skin.

It smells like tamanu and is not “beefy” at all. I’m obsessed with the fluffy, airy, whipped frosting texture. Trust me, you’ll love it too.

$37 • Cruelty Free & Vegan • EWG Verified

Three Ships Replenish Blueberry Barrier Repair Serum

Blueberries?! 🫐 Say no more. But seriously, this serum is packed with ceramides, prickly pear seed oil (anti-inflammatory/antioxidant), and upcycled blueberry seed oil (antioxidant/high levels of essential fatty acids). It assists the lipid barrier and prevents unwanted nasties from penetrating skin.

It has a light, fruity scent and a barely there consistency that sinks into skin. Three Ships also makes a barrier repair cream!

  1. Thank you! This is so helpful!
I keep seeing Froyia ads. It wasn’t in your review recommendations. It says it’s “all that” good stuff and more. Do you have any input, opinion? I literally had the aging system in my cart for a week, then I found you! 🧡

    1. Do you mean Froya? I haven’t tried their products, and haven’t checked every single product ingredient list, but from what I saw they seem pretty clean.
