In the age of TikTok and Reels, it seems like there’s a new trending product on social media every day lately, huh? I can’t keep up! 👵🏻 While there is the occasional natural brand that goes viral, most of them are not made with safe or low tox ingredients, unfortunately. When I see something becoming crazy popular, I just wanna shout from the rooftops “Noooooo, there’s a way cleaner product to use instead!”
So today I thought I’d share some recently trendy products and their non-toxic counterparts, so you don’t have to fall for the hype!

What makes a product “clean?” What ingredients should I avoid? 🤔
If you’re wondering this, you’re in the right place! There is no set definition of “clean” or “non-toxic” and any brand can use these terms to market their products. This makes things extra confusing because, oftentimes, the products are not truly safe and still use endocrine disruptors that mess with hormones or potentially carcinogenic ingredients.
I always recommend learning how to read labels and know what ingredients to avoid instead of falling for greenwashing or taking things at face value on the front of a product.
My Clean Beauty 101 ebook is the perfect place to start! It will teach you how to decipher ingredient labels, know what ingredients to avoid, how to switch to natural personal care products, and feel confident in your decisions along the way!
Safer Swaps for Popular Viral Beauty Products
Now, let’s jump in and look at the swaps!
CeraVe Renewing SA Cleanser ➡️ Three Ships Refresh Salicylic Acid Cleanser
CeraVe may be “developed by dermatologists” yet it still contains harmful ingredients such as PEGs, phenoxyethanol, and even one restricted in the EU, cholecalciferol!
Three Ships makes a similar gel cleanser with a natural source of salicylic acid (aspen bark) for oily or acne-prone skin types. It also has papaya which contains gentle enzymes. Buh bye, breakouts!

Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Lipstick ➡️ Kjaer Weis Matte Liquid Lipstick
Listen, if you’re gonna wear lipstick a few times a year, don’t sweat it. But if you wear it often, it’s an important swap to make since you’re partially ingesting it! 💄
Kjaer Weis’ “Enthralling” shade is the closest one I could find to the original Pillow Talk color. It’s a liquid but it’s both matte and has a pinky nude tone! Bonus: it’s refillable.
This Madame Gabriela lipstick in Sydney is pretty darn close too! It just leans toward a soft satin finish instead of matte (and happens to be one of my personal fave lippies!).

Color Wow Anti-Frizz Spray ➡️ Josh Rosebrook Serum Spray
Color Wow is made with silicones, quaternium-18, propylene glycol, and phenoxyethanol which should be avoided if you’re ingredient-conscious. Silicones are popular in hair care products and are a cheap and quick way to make hair silky and shiny. However, they’re occlusive and actually coat hair follicles which is not a good thing. Essentially, they are a temporary solution and can block out moisture and nutrients over time, leading to buildup and needing to wash more frequently. Not to mention, they’re not biodegradable.
Josh Rosebrook’s spray uses organic, herbal ingredients and leaves hair sooooooo soft and smooth, sans silicones. It also has ingredients that promote healthy hair growth, tame frizz, and restore shine (plus, it works as a heat protectant). It also smells incredible!

Dior Lip Glow Oil ➡️ Saie Glossybounce Lip Oil
Saie’s *new* lip oils are so fun! They give a major glossy shine and are packed with jojoba, hyaluronic acid, and shea butter for super supple lips. They have a natural wash of color that you can build up, and one shade is clear. My favorite shade is Dip, a dusty rose.
I literally cannot stop rubbing my lips together when I wear these because it just feels so dang good. No hydrogenated polyisobutene or parfum, unlike Dior!

Dior Rosy Glow Blush ➡️ RMS ReDimension Hydra Powder Blush
Mover over, Dior, there’s a better blush in town. RMS’ ReDimension blushes are GORGEOUS. They’re buttery and apply softly, but you can build them up for more intensity. The finish is luminous; it has some shimmer to it but isn’t glittery. The color stays put for a really long time, too. And they’re made with wildcrafted buriti and organic jojoba oils.
My favorite shade is Pomegranate Fizz! You can also get refill pans and reuse the outer compact.

Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi Bronzing Drops ➡️ Saie Glowy Super Gel
Drunk Elephant is not the *worst* brand when it comes to ingredients, but I think many people believe they are cleaner than they actually are. For instance, these drops are formulated with polysorbates, phenoxyethanol, and hydrogenated polyisobutene. I suggest Saie’s Glowy Super Gel instead, especially the darker Sunglow shade if you really want to be a bronzed goddess. It’s such a versatile highlighter that you can wear alone or mix with makeup.
Another great dupe is Pai’s Impossible Glow drops!
K18 Leave-In Repair Hair Mask ➡️ Evolvh UltraRepair Reconstructing Masque
When I look at K18’s hair mask ingredients, it’s really just a bunch of alcohols and nothing that actually looks like it will promote hair health! Propylene glycol, synthetic fragrance, phenoxyethanol…not something I’d use!
Evolvh’s UltraRepair mask is packed with tons of organic extracts and oils, plus amino and fatty acids to help restore hair. Great for breakage, split ends, frizz, or damaged hair. Oh yeah, and it’s wayyyyyyy more affordable!
Also available here at The Detox Market.
Laneige Lip Mask ➡️ Alpyn Lip Plumping Mask
Laneige uses lots of synthetic ingredients such as fragrance and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene, a preservative linked to organ toxicity). Alpyn’s lip mask is the perfect swap! It’s a treatment that you can just apply like a balm or leave on overnight as a mask 👄
It’s made with sweet agave and uses white willow bark (nature’s salicylic acid) to exfoliate. It sloughs away roughness and seriously leaves lips plump and super smooth! Such a godsend in the colder months, too.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara ➡️ Honest Beauty Extreme Length Mascara
I grew up using Maybelline makeup, but not anymore! The Sky High mascara uses paraffin, PEGs, and BHT so I definitely recommend skipping it, particularly because it’s so close to your sensitive eye area.
Honest’s lengthening mascara is a long-time fave of mine, and it’s on the more affordable side for a clean mascara. It has a primer on one end which helps give even more separation and volume. So good and I adore how it makes my lashes look!

NARS Laguna Bronzing Cream ➡️ Saie Sun Melt Cream Bronzer
NARS bronzer cream may be smooth, but it’s loaded with silicones (and parfum)! Once again, Saie has an awesome replacement. It’s velvety, applies seamlessly (which I appreciate because bronzers can be intimidating!), and gives a sun-kissed glow that doesn’t look streaky. You can build it up for a darker bronze, or keep it more mild and natural. Love it!
Seint ➡️ PiperBlue Organic Makeup
Seint has all-in-one build-your-own cream palettes. Unfortunately, they use petroleum, paraffin, and phenoxyethanol in their products.
PiperBlue is organic with minimal ingredients that nourish skin! Everything is handcrafted and blended in the USA with pure or wildcrafted ingredients. You purchase individual color singles that fit within a compact and refill as needed. They have blush/lip cream, bronzer, color corrector, contour, and foundation singles.
The creams are moisturizing but feel lightweight on skin, and they blend easily. I find that the foundation is adjustable light to medium coverage and has a skin-like, semi-dewy finish!

Sol de Janeiro’s Brazilian Bum Bum Cream ➡️ Osea Undaria Body Butter
One of my readers asked me for a swap for “bum bum cream” and I was SO confused 🤣 But now I know that this cream is, in fact, an internet sensation. It may be infused with guaraná extract and açaí oil, but the formula also has fragrance, phenoxyethanol, and butylphenyl methylpropional (which is banned in the EU!).
Osea makes a lovely and luscious body butter. The scent is not the exact same, but I think once you smell Osea’s, you’ll fall in LOVE. It kind of smells like a tropical orange creamsicle. Mmmmm! It has skin-loving ingredients that firm, moisturize, hydrate, and renew.

Supergoop Glowscreen ➡️ RMS SuperNatural Radiance Serum
I think a lot of people get tricked by Supergoop; they do make some sunscreens with purely mineral sunblock ingredients, however, most also use endocrine-disrupting chemical SPF ingredients such as avobenzone and octisalate. Particularly, Glowscreen. They label it as “clean chemical” which is greenwashy, in my opinion.
RMS’ new SPF serums are wonderful! They’re made with mineral zinc oxide for sun protection and have the most beautiful, luminous finish that doesn’t feel greasy or look too dewy. It has a sheer tint and leaves skin with a soft-focus glow. So pretty! ✨

Tree Hut Sugar Scrub ➡️ Beauty by Earth Scrub
Just because something uses sugar, doesn’t mean the rest of the ingredients are natural! 👀 Tree Hut uses talc (which can be contaminated with asbestos fibers, yikes!), retinyl palmitate, fragrance, and polysorbates.
Beauty By Earth’s scrubs are organic, natural, and made with fair-trade sugar. Available in different scents!
