Recipe: Easy DIY Cold Brew Coffee at Home

Easy DIY Cold Brew Coffee

Summer may be winding down, but there is still time to enjoy some cold brew coffee! It’s different than iced coffee, btw! Instead of just pouring hot coffee over ice, you let the coffee grinds (grounds..? I don’t know) sit in water at room temperature for 12-18 hours. You don’t need any fancy equipment or espresso machines, either! Plus it’s less acidic than regular coffee (your teeth and stomach will thank you). ☕

Here’s the concoction I’ve been perfecting all summer:

  • 1 cup coarsely ground coffee, freshly ground (organic of course)
  • 4 cups filtered water

  1. Pour the grounds in a large glass container that you can cover with a lid or cheesecloth. A big mason jar will work.
  2. Add the water.
  3. Let sit for 12-18 hours at room temperature.
  4. Strain the mixture. I've found that pouring into a french press is the easiest! I also have a Chemex that I pour it over a filter into and let sit for a while. Do whatever works for what you have, just make sure all the grounds are out of the mixture.
  5. Transfer the mixture back into a clean glass jar or pitcher, however you want to store it. This is now a concentrate, so it will be really strong if you try it. Usually for cold brews, they need to be diluted with water. I usually pour about another cup in and stir.
  6. Refrigerate, and enjoy!
