Why You Should Use Face Oils ASAP (& Best Organic Oils for Each Skin Type!)

Best Organic Facial Serums

Why yes, I do have an obsession with facial oils. To some people, the thought of putting oils on your face sounds like a bad idea. That is a biiiiiiig misconception. If you use the right types, it’s actually super beneficial. In fact, switching to oils helped heal my acne and honestly has changed my skin for the better. If your interest is piqued, keep on reading!

Benefits of Using Oils in Skincare:

You see, just using water-based lotions and moisturizers is not as effective as something oil-based. Anything water-based will basically evaporate off your skin as the day goes on (aka transepidermal water loss or TEWL). Oils are occlusive, meaning they both lock in hydration and provide a protective barrier to keep your skin moisturized throughout the day and mimic skin’s natural chemistry. They are AMAZING! 💦

For some reason, we’re taught to believe that all oils = bad for your skin and are comedogenic (meaning they clog pores and produce comedones). That is a myth and so FALSE!

The key is to use oils that have a low comedogenic rating (0-2 on a scale of 5). Here are some commonly used oils and their ratings:

✅ LOW COMEDOGENIC OILS:

  • Argan (0)
  • Hemp seed (0)
  • Sunflower seed (0)
  • Black cumin seed (0-1)
  • Rosehip (1)
  • Sea buckthorn (1)
  • Plum kernel (1-2)
  • Prickly pear (1-2)
  • Avocado (2)
  • Grapeseed (2)
  • Jojoba (2)
  • Pumpkin seed (2)
  • Sweet almond (2)
  • Tamanu (2)

⚠️ HIGH COMEDOGENIC OILS:

  • Soybean (3)
  • Marula (3-4)
  • Coconut (4) [not to be confused with MCT fractionated coconut oil which is rated 2-3]
  • Flaxseed (4)
  • Palm kernel (4)
  • Wheat germ (5)

It’s also important to note that the comedogenic scale isn’t a strictly regulated system, so just use it as a starting point, and listen to how your skin responds to different ingredients. Some people do totally fine with the higher-rated oils!

Comedogenic ratings of skincare oils

In general, opt for organic, unrefined, and cold-pressed oils if possible. And be sure to store your products in a cool, dark place to keep them fresh and prevent them from going rancid!

How & When to Apply Facial Oils:

They should always be applied as the last step in a skincare routine (apply products from lightest to heaviest consistency). It’s best to first apply a toner or serum for hydration, then a water-based lotion if you need extra moisture, and then oil to seal everything in.

Simply use 3-6 drops on your fingertips, then gently pat into your face and neck in upward and outward motions (do not rub them in too aggressively). Allow them to absorb for a few minutes before applying makeup or sunscreen. All done!

FAQ: What’s the difference between a serum and an oil?

The terms are frequently used interchangeably, so it’s confusing! A serum is a concentrated, lightweight formula that is to be applied before a moisturizer or oil. They typically contain humectants that draw water to cells and they are designed to penetrate deeper into skin. Oils, on the other hand, don’t contain water and are meant to sit on top of skin. They offer an occlusive barrier that keeps hydration in and moisturizes.

The Best Facial Oils for Your Specific Concerns & Skin Type:

As a blogger, I’ve had to pleasure of trying DOZENS of face oils over the years. Since we all have different skin types and concerns, I decided to highlight the best face oils for each skin type, so you can find one that’s most appropriate for YOU and your particular skin goals! Let’s get started.

First, I want to note that all of these are plant-based, cruelty-free, and vegan. Secondly, they are ALL sufficient for dry skin types due to the inherent nature of oils!

Dayspring Facial Oil [$45]

Best for sensitive and stressed skin • Suitable for all skin types

My friend Elysse created Dayspring skincare with sensitive skin types in mind! The majority of her products (like this one) contain NO essential oils which can be irritating and sensitizing for some people. This facial oil is formulated with 12 sun-infused plants and herbs chosen for their soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, such as chamomile, plantain leaf, reishi, and yarrow. It naturally has an herbaceous and grounding scent, so good!

Erin's Faces Organic Tamanu Oil

Erin’s Faces Tamanu Oil [$40+]

Best for irritated, stressed, reactive, or blemish-prone skin • Suitable for all skin types

If you’re not familiar with tamanu, you should be! It has so many incredible benefits for skin and is very healing. The oil is extracted from seeds of the tamanu nut tree and is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and has wound-healing abilities that support skin barrier function. So if you have any skin conditions like acne (it’s been shown to work against acne bacterial strains such as Propionibacterium acnes and Propionibacterium granulosum), dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, then I suggest trying this!

Erin’s Faces is just 100% pure and organic tamanu oil, with no fillers or additional ingredients! It’s also virgin and cold-pressed so the quality is on another level.

I love using this when my skin is angry or inflamed and it always comes in clutch. It’s on the thicker side, FYI, and tamanu does have a nutty, earthy, slightly smoky scent that might take some getting used to. But it’s truly so special!

This is available in three scent options and my husband likes the Mountain Pine one; they all have a base of organic jojoba oil and then are scented with various essential oils. Jojoba has a unique molecular structure and mimics skin’s sebum, so it helps balance oil production too. It can also be used as a beard or shave oil!

This is spendy, but wow, it’s WONDERFUL! It has only 4 ingredients and is free of essential oils, making it ideal for even sensitive skin. The key components are organic chia oil, virgin plum oil, astaxanthin, and squalane which are nutrient-dense, packed with antioxidants and fatty acids, support barrier function, combat free radicals, and increase cellular turnover to help reverse signs of aging. Say hello to healthy, glowing skin! ✨

In addition, it’s an ultra-lightweight, fast-absorbing oil so even if you use 4-6 drops, it won’t leave you looking or feeling greasy. There is almost a dry feel to it yet it’s still nourishing. And btw, the smell is intoxicating—it reminds me of fruity Starburst candy!

Pai Carbon Star Face Clarifying Oil

Pai Carbon Star Overnight Clarifying Face Oil [$39-59]

Best for oily, combination, acne, or blemish-prone skin

Not gonna lie, I was equal parts intrigued and a little nervous to use this oil because it’s BLACK! But despite the color, it applies clearly, feels silky, and has no smell! The color is from vegetable charcoal which is detoxifying, removes impurities, and buffs away dead skin cells. It also contains organic black cumin seed oil which is naturally antibacterial and powerful against blemishes.

It’s super nice when your skin is congested; I can really tell that it helps calm things down overnight because my skin is noticeably clearer in the morning after using it. You can use this daily at nighttime, or as needed when your skin is breaking out. Also good for teenagers to incorporate into their routine!

Best for dull, damaged, or mature skin • Suitable for all skin types

If you need some rejuvenation, look no further! This oil is GORGEOUS and has been a long-time staple in my skincare cabinet (I especially like to use it after microneedling). Organic rosehip oil, the all-star ingredient in this, is a wrinkle fighter known as nature’s retinol and has been proven to help regenerate the skin and promote cell turnover (naturally contains high amounts of Vitamin A, C, and antioxidants).

It’s a “dry oil” meaning it absorbs quickly without leaving a heavy or oily residue on your skin. Got something to heal or want to liven up your complexion, this will do the trick!
