Being a thick-haired girlie is both a blessing and a curse (iykyk), but one positive is that my hair maintains a curl pretty well on its own. It’s also naturally wavy, so I don’t really need firm-hold hair sprays, which can leave hair feeling crusty or weighed down. Enter…sea salt spray!
If you’re looking for something that’s lighter hold or want to give your locks an ocean-tossed, tousled texture, you might wanna try a sea salt spray. Keep reading for more info on how to use them and why I love Plaine Products’ new one, which is totally natural and sustainable!

About the Brand: Plaine Products
Plaine Products was founded by two sisters, Lindsey and Alison Delaplaine, and it began with a dream to have less plastic in the world. After looking around their bathrooms and realizing how much plastic they owned, the sisters started thinking about how to change that and how to make it easy for others to do the same.
(I actually know Lindsey and Ali personally and can confirm that they are so nice and genuine. This truly is a remarkable brand that has customers’ best interests at heart!)
Plaine makes a variety of products for hair, face, and body. Including shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, body wash, hand wash, face wash, moisturizer, and hair treatment/styling products. I have been a loyal customer of theirs since 2018 and think you’ll enjoy ’em too!

Review: Sea Salt Hair Spray
Now let’s chat more about Plaine Products’ *new* Sea Salt Spray; I was super excited to hear that they were launching one!
If you’re unfamiliar, sea salt sprays are more lightweight than traditional hairsprays. Think about how hair looks after spending a day at the beach: tousled, textured, and pretty mermaid waves. The sprays are meant to emulate that! They provide slight grit without making your hair feel too dirty or stiff.
Ways you can use the Plaine Products Sea Salt Spray:
- Apply to damp hair and style as desired or scrunch to enhance natural waves
- Spray on dry hair (focus more on the strands/ends and avoid roots) as a texturizer or lift layers underneath to boost volume
- Use after styling as a light-hold hairspray (this is my preferred method; I curl my hair with a flat iron!)

Hero Ingredients:
- Sodium chloride: Not just any ole’ table salt—Plaine uses ethically sourced, mineral-rich Himalayan Pink salt. It slightly dehydrates hair and absorbs extra oil, which is how sea salt sprays work their magic!
- Magnesium sulfate: Also known as Epsom Salts! Tightens curls and provides elasticity.
- Aloe leaf juice: Helps soften, nourish, and moisturize hair (plus offset any excess dryness from the salt)
Scent:
This does NOT contain synthetic fragrances, but has a pleasant citrus/grapefruit scent from grapefruit peel essential oil. It smells lovely and not too strong!
Finish & Hold:
A matte finish with a gentle, flexible hold. I’ve tried a lot of sea salt sprays, and this one has a little stronger grip compared to others, but it definitely still feels weightless and doesn’t leave hair rigid or crusty. It keeps my curls/style intact all day!
Pump Details:
I do wish the spray were a bit finer of a mist. It’s not like the stream is too direct or anything, but it would be nice if it were more dispersed. And in full transparency, I did have a minor issue with the pump—at one point, it got clogged and stopped spraying! This is likely due to the salt crystalizing, which I’ve had happen with other sea salt sprays before. Lindsey, the founder, suggested that I run warm water through the sprayer, which did the trick! 👏
Final Thoughts:
Overall, Plaine Products’ Sea Salt Hair Spray delivers on its promise of lightweight, textured waves with a natural finish, while staying true to its low tox, eco-friendly ethos. If you’re looking for a product that’s both sustainable and effective, this refillable sea salt spray is definitely worth a try!
BTW, Plaine offers a small 2.5 oz bottle of the Sea Salt spray too, which is perfect for traveling or if you want to sample it before committing to a larger bottle. Try it to see how long the bottle lasts you, then you can set up a recurring subscription based on your ideal interval, and save some money!
