#ToxicTuesday & #ToxicThursday Roundup: January 2017

ToxicTuesday Roundup January 2017

Each Tuesday and Thursday, I show some options for safer swaps you can make with your products. Here’s the roundup from January!

āŒ #ToxicTuesday āŒ ————————— TOXIC: Conventional cleaners like this Lysol all-purpose cleaner are full of really dangerous chemicals that should not be breathed in or come in contact with your skin! This one here has ingredients like {ammonium chlorides, ethanolamine, fragrance, dyes, and dipropylene glycol butyl ether}. The @environmentalworkinggroup gives this a big fat F! Super harmful for those with asthma or respiratory problems, can cause skin allergies and irritation, is toxic to our organs, and is bad for the environment! Not to mention that the "fresh lemon scent" isn't even real lemon šŸ¤” ————————— USE INSTEAD: @puracy Natural Multi-Surface Cleaner. NO SLS, SLES, sulfates, phosphates, petroleum-based ingredients, animal by-products, dyes, chlorine, petrochemicals, ammonia, or caustics! Naturally derived, hypoallergenic, non-toxic, vegan, gluten-free, and biodegradable. And these are only [$7] for 25 fl. oz.! You can find them on Amazon or Puracy's website. Happy cleaning šŸ›€

āŒ #ToxicTuesday āŒ ————————— TOXIC: Sephora sells a mask by Perricone MD called the Chloro Plasma Purifying Mask. But the ingredients are šŸ˜µ such as {PEG, aluminum silicate, cyclopentasiloxane, butylene glycol, phenoxyethanol, paraffins, propylene glycol, and about 30 other bad ingredients}. These are carcinogenic and synthetic ingredients and contain preservatives! Oh yeah and it's [$80]. ————————— USE INSTEAD: @acureorganics Argan Stem Cell Chlorella Growth Factor Face Mask. I found one for [$10] at Target and I've seen them at Whole Foods too. Made with {organic aloe, acai, blackberry, rosehip, chlorophyll, argan oil, and LOTS of other great extracts}. Good stuff! I use this one all the time and love how it feels and smells. ————————— Another great option for a mask is @osmiaorganics Detox Exfoliating Mask! I haven't tried it but the reviews and ingredients are šŸ‘

āŒ #ToxicThursday āŒ ————————— I don't wanna say that this Almond Breeze almond milk is toxic because it's not, but I do want to point out some ingredients and additives that you should look out for when buying non-dairy milks! The ingredients in this one are {water, almonds, calcium carbonate, tapioca starch, sea salt, potassium citrate, carrageenan, sunflower lecithin, natural flavor, vitamin A palmitate, vitamin D2, and D-alpha tocopherol}. It's great that this product is Non-GMO, but some of those ingredients aren't the best: šŸ”ø First of all, CARRAGEENAN. Derived from seaweed and used as a thickener/stabilizer. However, a lot of people are allergic to this and it actually is linked with gastrointestinal issues and inflammation. Avoid it! šŸ”ø Natural flavor, don't be tricked by this one. This term can mean anything and is likely NOT natural! And if you buy flavored almond milks, watch out for too much sugar! šŸ”ø Synthetic vitamins. Almonds naturally have calcium, vitamin E, and other nutrients. But a lot of milks are fortified with palmitate, vitamin D12, calcium carbonate, and tocopherol acetate. Here's an interesting article on why you might want to avoid synthetic vitamins: http://markitonutrition.com/warning-harmful-chemicals-in-almond-milk šŸ”ø And lastly, this isn't organic šŸ˜ž so there are likely pesticides in here! ————————— USE INSTEAD: @thenewbarn Organic Unsweetened Almond Milk. Made with {spring water, organic almonds, organic acacia gum, and sea salt}. That's it! Simple and delicious. You don't need stabilizers and thickeners to have yummy almond milk. Even though it's unsweetened, it still has a nice almond taste which is what you want! Some other milks are so diluted and have too much water, and you might not be getting your money's worth. New Barn is sold at Whole Foods for around [$5] – but making your own almond milk is pretty easy too if you're up for that!

āŒ #ToxicTuesday āŒ ————————— You might think an egg is an egg, right? šŸ³ Well, did you ever think how that hen was raised, or what it was fed? All of that affects how nutritious and delicious your egg is! A typical egg you buy at the store is from a chicken that was fed GMO corn and soy, and likely stuffed in a big giant warehouse with no room to move and no sunlight. They are so sick that they are pumped with antibiotics. Some are given growth hormones and can't even walk because they grow too fast for their body to handle. It's all really sad, but luckily you can buy good eggs where this doesn't happen! You might think the terms "cage free" or "free range" or "vegetarian fed" are good. But you actually want to look for "organic pasture-raised" Here's why šŸ‘‡ ————————— EAT INSTEAD: Organic pasture-raised eggs. This means the chickens are not given antibiotics or hormones, and they are free to roam around outside and forage for bugs (their natural diet). They are not given GMO feed. They are healthy, happy chickens, and therefore their eggs taste WAY better. Seriously, the yolks are richer in color. I buy the brand @vitalfarms but as long as you buy organic pasture-raised, you're good! šŸ” ————————— There's a lot of confusion about egg labels and terms. āŒ #ToxicThursday āŒ Since I live in Wisconsin and usually don't see the sun between November and April, this one is for you lucky ones that live in warmer climates, or may be getting ready for spring break! ā˜€ļø ————————— TOXIC: Banana Boat (and other conventional SPFs like Neutrogena and Coppertone) contain really harmful ingredients. First of all, watch out for active ingredients like {OXYBENZONE, OCTINOXATE, or HOMOSALATE}. These penetrate the skin and leach into your bloodstream, and act like estrogen which can throw off your hormones. They have been linked with cancer, endometriosis, and other disorders. Next, watch out for inactive ingredients like {retinyl palmitate} which speeds up the development of skin tumors and lesions. And lastly, if it is a spray, there are inhalation risks. Not to mention the other inactive ingredients like {fragrance, phenoxyethanol, paraffin, polymers, etc.} which are dangerous as well. ————————— USE INSTEAD: @rawelementsusa Eco-friendly SPF [$19]. Does not contain any of the nasty ingredients listed above! It's active ingredient is {non-nano zinc oxide}. It's made with almost all organic ingredients like {sunflower oil, green tea, coffee, hemp seed oil} and more. Rated the #1 sunscreen by @environmentalworkinggroup šŸ‘ {non-GMO, biodegradable, and Leaping Bunny certified} I also love @coola_suncare SPF products!

āŒ #ToxicTuesday āŒ ————————— DIRTY: One of Sephora's most popular bronzers is this Too Faced Soleil Matte Bronzer. Like many common bronzers, these ingredients are dirty! ā€¢ {FRAGRANCE} Not sure why bronzer needs to smell good, but okay! Fragrance is one of the most dangerous ingredients for you, as the term can be any combination of about 3,000 different chemicals out there and is not regulated. MAJOR hormone disruptor! ā€¢ {TALC} can have asbestos in it! It can cause irritation, cancer, and organ toxicity. When breathed in, it can cause lung inflammation. ā€¢ {PHENOXYETHANOL} is a synthetic antimicrobial preservative which causes skin irritation and can depress the nervous system. ā€¢ Lots of other nasty, synthetic ingredients in here besides these three. I do not recommend this bronzer! ————————— USE INSTEAD: @rejuvaminerals Pressed Powder Bronzer, made with really good ingredients like {organic tapioca, organic jojoba, organic carnauba, cocoa, organic blueberry, and organic grape}. I love Rejuva products because they are {vegan, cruelty-free, non-nano, non-GMO, and gluten free}. The trial size for this bronzer is [$8.95] šŸ‘

āŒ #ToxicTuesday āŒ Wine edition! šŸ· ————————— DIRTY: Most of the wines that are under $10 or mass produced like Sutter Home have tons and tons of additives and stabilizers in them! Wine grapes are also heavily sprayed with pesticides which make it into your drink. If you get wine headaches, it's probably from all of these added ingredients and excessive sugars that are not good for you. And did you know that a lot of wines contain animal by-products? Since wine is not required to have ingredient labels on the bottles, it's easy to assume that all wines are created equal. Not the case! ————————— USE INSTEAD: Look for wine that is organic, made with organic grapes, or biodynamic. That means you won't be consuming lots of pesticides! Wine made from smaller wineries is better too. You should look for the purest wine possible that was not overly processed.
